Fried cod fish tacos are probably the best tacos out there. They are relatively simple to make and can be customized in so many ways. A few tips before you start: 1. make use you have all the ingredients (self rising flour, soda are the ones easy to miss), 2. use a deep pot to fry, 3. Start by chopping and prepping all the toppings before frying fish, cause once fish is done, you'd want to eat those tacos while still warm.
So, get ready for Taco Tuesday and get your grocery order in! If you have a family member that is not crazy about fish, I normally make a fried ground beef with onion, fajita seasoning and a spoon of tomato paste as an alternative to the fish tacos (scroll to the end for the simple recipe).
This is how I put my taco together: soft flour taco shell (warmed up in the oven for 3 minutes), spoon of crema, slaw, fish, topped with cotija cheese, cilantro and jalapeño pepper.
This portion serves family of hungry 4 (making 14-16 small tacos). start with prepping sauce and all the toppings, then fry the fish.
Taco shells:
🌮Soft small flour taco shells - about 14-16, warm them up in the over for 3 minutes at 350f before serving.
Sauce, crema:
🌮3:1 ratio of sour cream and mayo (I use 3 tbsp sour cream to 1 tbsp mayo)
🌮1/2 lime juice squeezed in
🌮Bit of garlic powder
🌮Salt (chili or paprika for extra flavor)
Easy purple cabbage slaw:
🌮1/2 purple cabbage thinly sliced
🌮1/2 red onion finely chopped
🌮1/2 lime juice squeezed in
🌮Bunch of cilantro chopped
🌮Salt
Massage with hands a bit to absorb all juices
For fish:
🌮1 pound cod fillet cut in 1 inch thick 3 inch long slices (don't cut them to think as the batter will make them fluffier)
🌮Oil for deep frying
🌮1 cup Perrier or Club Soda or similar flavorless seltzer water
🌮1 cup self rising flour
🌮Salt
Whisk the water, flour and salt together. Heat the frying oil in a deep pan, have oil about 1 inch high in the pan. Dip the fish pieces in batter, cover from all sides, and fry in oil from both sides for 3-4 min each side. Place on plate lined with parchment paper.
Other toppings:
🌮Jalapeño peppers
🌮Avocado
🌮Grated/crumbled cotija cheese
🌮Lime
🌮Cilantro
If you want to add fried ground beef to the menu, here's a simple recipe: fry 1 pounds ground beef with finally chopped onion in oil. separate chunks with wooden spoon. once it is almost done, add 1 tbsp tomato paste and 1 tbsp fajita seasoning. mix well, add salt to taste and fry another few minutes.
